Q14 / 90 · JEE Main 2016 (09 Apr Online) · Chemistry

What will happen when a block of copper metal is dropped into a beaker containing a solution of 1 M ZnSO4?

  • A
The copper metal will dissolve with evolution of oxygen gas.
  • B
The copper metal will dissolve with evolution of hydrogen gas.
  • Correct answer
    C
    No reaction will occur.
  • D
The copper metal will dissolve and zinc metal will be deposited.

Solution

Zn is above Cu in electrochemical series. So, Zn will reduce Cu2+ to Cu.
Cu + Zn2+ → No reaction
Displacement reaction is feasible in opposite direction only.
Cu2+ + Zn  → Zn2+ + Cu ↓

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
