Q34 / 225 · JEE Main 2003 · Chemistry
What volume of hydrogen gas, at $273 \mathrm{~K}$ and $1 \mathrm{~atm}$, pressure will be consumed in obtaining $21.6 \mathrm{~g}$ of elemental boron (atomic mass $=10.8$ ) from the reducti on of boron trichloride by hydrogen?
- Correct answerA$67.2 \mathrm{~L}$
- B$44.8 \mathrm{~L}$
- C$22.4 \mathrm{~L}$
- D$89.6 \mathrm{~L}$
Solution
No. of moles of boron $=\frac{21.6}{10.8}=2$
for $\mathrm{BCl}_3$
$\therefore 1$ mole of Boron $=3$ mole of $\mathrm{Cl}$
$\therefore 2$ mole of Boron $=6$ mole of $\mathrm{Cl}$
$\mathrm{H}_2+\mathrm{Cl}_2 \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{HCI}$
$\Rightarrow 3$ moles of Hydrogen is required
$=3 \times 22.4=67.2$ Litre
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
