Figure
What is the maximum force F that can be applied on block m1, so that both m1 & m2 will move together? There is no friction between m1 and the horizontal table. The coefficient of friction between 'm1' and 'm2' is μ.

  • A
    μm2g
  • Correct answer
    B
    μm1+m2g
  • C
    μm1 m2 m1+m2g
  • D
    μm1g

Solution

In the above question the total normal force, FN=m1g, and we know that friction force, f=μFN=μm1g=m1a, here μ is the coefficient of friction between two blocks, now we can find the acceleration,
a=μg, then the maximum force should be,
Fmax=amtotal=μgm1+m2.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
