What is the correct order of melting temperature of $\mathrm{C}, \mathrm{Si}$, $\mathrm{Ge}$ ?

  • A
    $\mathrm{C}>\mathrm{Ge}>\mathrm{Si}$
  • B
    Si $>$ C $>$ Ge
  • Correct answer
    C
    $\mathrm{C}>\mathrm{Si}>\mathrm{Ge}$
  • D
    Si $>$ Ge $>$ C

Solution

The element belonging to carbon family or group 14 are as follows:- C, Si, Ge, Sn, $\mathrm{Pb}$. The element C, Si are non metal, $\mathrm{Ge}$ is a metalloid and $\mathrm{Sn}, \mathrm{Pb}$ are metal. The metallic character goes on increasing down the group. These element form covalent network in their molecule and in the downward series the metals also forms metallic bonding. Since covalent and metallic bond leads to high melting point and it decreases from $\mathrm{C}$ to $\mathrm{Pb}$ due to decrease in attractive forces. $\therefore$ order of melting temperature: $\mathrm{C}>\mathrm{Si}>\mathrm{Ge}$

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
