Q17 / 54 · JEE Advanced 2020 (Paper 1) · Chemistry

U92238 is known to undergo radioactive decay to form Pb82206 by emitting alpha and bet a particles. A rock initially contained 68×10-6g of U92238. If the number of alpha particles that it would emit during its radioactive decay of U92238 to Pb82206 in three half-lives is Z×1018, then what is the value of Z?

Correct answer: 1.2

Solution

92238U→82206Pb+24He+6 −1    0β

0.286×10-6mole

0.286×10-6×Na

=0.286×6.02×1017

=1.72×1017

After 3 half lives

N=No(2)3=1.72×10178

=0.215×1017

So, no. of molecule of uranium decayed

=[1.72-0.215]×1017

=1.5×1017-

So No. of α particle produced =8×1.5×1017

=12×1017

=1.2×1018

Hence, the correct answer is 1.2.
