Two vibrating strings ' A ' and ' B ' produce beats of frequency 8 Hz. The beat frequency is found to reduce to 4 Hz if the tension in the string 'A' is slightly reduced. If the original frequency of A is 320 Hz, then the frequency of B ' is

  • A
    324 Hz
  • Correct answer
    B
    312 Hz
  • C
    316 Hz
  • D
    328 Hz

Solution

The frequency of the string, A, fA =320 Hz Frequency of string B=fB Beat’s frequency,n=8 Hz. Beat's Frequency is given as: n=fA-fB⇒8=fA-fB=320-fB⇒fB=312 Hz & 328 Hz Frequency decreases with a decrease in the tension in a string. This is because the frequency is directly proportional to the square root of the tension. It is given as: f∝T Hence, the beat frequency cannot be 328 Hz∴fB=312 Hz.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
