Two infinitely long thin straight wires having uniform linear charge densities 2λ and 3λ are arranged parallel to each other at a distance R apart. The intensity at a point midway between them is

  • A
    λ2πε0R
  • Correct answer
    B
    λπε0R
  • C
    5λπε0R
  • D
    2λ3πε0R

Solution

Given for first infinitely long straight wire, linear charge density =2λ.
For second infinitely long straight wire, linear charge density 3λ
The distance between to infinite parallel straight wires =R
Distance of point p from first and second wire =R2

Electric field due to a long wire having charge density 2λ=2λ2πε0R
Electric field intensity at P due to the first wire,E1=2λ2πε0R2=2λπε0R ...(1)
Electric field intensity at P due to the second wire, E2=λ'2πε0R2=3λπε0R
∴ Electric field intensity at a middle point due to Both wires E=E2-E1 +=3λπε0R-2λπε0R=λπε0R

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
