Q147 / 160 · TS EAMCET 2021 (05 Aug Shift 1) · Physics

Two capacitors, C1=2mF and C2=8mF are connected in series across a 300 V source. Then

  • Correct answer
    A
    The charge on each capacitor is 480×10-3 C
  • B
    The potential difference across C1 is 60 V
  • C
    The potential difference across C2 is 240 V
  • D
    The energy stored in the system is 5.2×10-2 J

Solution

The capacitors are connected in series then the net capacitance will be, Cnet=C1×C2C1+C2=2×82+8=1.6 mF, then the net charge will be, Qnet=CnetV=1.6×10-3×300=480×10-3 C, which will be same in each capacitor now potential difference across each capacitor will be,
V1=QnetC1=480×10-3 C2×10-3=240 V and V2=QnetC2=480×10-3 C8×10-3=60 V

and the energy stored will be,
U=12CnetV2=12×1.8×10-3×3002=81 J

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
