Q155 / 160 · TS EAMCET 2021 (04 Aug Shift 2) · Physics

The work function of a metal is hv0. Light of frequency v falls on this metal. The photoelectric effect will take place only if

  • Correct answer
    A
    v>v0
  • B
    v>2v0
  • C
    v<v0
  • D
    v<v02

Solution

According to Einstein's photoelectric equation,

hν-W=Kmax, where h=Plank's constant, ν=frequency of radiation, W=work function and Kmax=maximum kinetic energy of photoelectron.

∵Kmax≥0, as kinetic energy can't be negative.

∴hν-W≥0⇒hν≥W

For the photoelectric effect to take place, the energy of radiation, hν must be greater than the work function, hν0 of the metal. That is,

hν≥hν0⇒ν≥ν0.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
