Q100 / 200 · Manipal (MET) 2011 · Mathematics

The ratio in which the line $3 x+4 y+2=0$ divides the distance between $3 x+4 y+5=0$ and $3 x+4 y-5=0$, is

  • A
    $7: 3$
  • Correct answer
    B
    $3: 7$
  • C
    $2: 3$
  • D
    None of the above

Solution

Since, the lines $3 x+4 y+2=0$ and $3 x+4 y+5=0$ are on the same side of the origin. The distance between these lines is $5-2=3$. And the line $3 x+4 y+2=0$ and $3 x+4 y-5=0$ are opposite side of the origin, The distance between these lies is 7 . Hence, required ratio is $3: 7$.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
