Q40 / 90 · JEE Main 2023 (13 Apr Shift 2) · Mathematics

The random variable X follows binomial distribution B(n, p), for which the difference of the mean and the variance is 1.

If 2 P(X=2)=3 P(X=1), then n2P(X>1) is equal to

  • A
    15
  • Correct answer
    B
    11
  • C
    12
  • D
    16

Solution

Given that the difference between the mean and variance is 1.

⇒np-npq=1

⇒np(1-q)=1

⇒np2=1

Also given that,

⇒2P(X=2)=3P(X=1)

⇒2·C2np2qn-2=3·C1np·qn-1

⇒2·n·(n-1)2·p=3·n·q

⇒(n-1)p=3(1-p)

⇒1p2-1p=3(1-p)

⇒(1-p)(1+p)p=3(1-p)

⇒1+p=3p

⇒  p=12

∴n=4.

Now,

n2P(x>1)=n2(1-P(x=1)-P(x=0))=161-C14·124-124=11

Hence this is the correct option.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
