When Bromine react with toluene (in which methyl group is ring activating and para directing group according to resonance) in the presence of $\mathrm{Fe}/\mathrm{dark}$ then product $\mathrm{P}$ which is obtained is o−bromotoluene.and product $\mathrm{Q}$ is p−bromotoluene and this reaction is called electrophilic substitution reaction.

Now, when o−bromotoluene react with $\mathrm{Mg}/\mathrm{ether}$ in the presence of water this will lead to formation of phenol and when it is further treated with $\mathrm{HCHO}$ then we will be left with o-hydroxymethylphenol and p-hydroxymethylphenol that willbe our final product $\text{R}$ and $\mathrm{S}$.
