Q33 / 97 · NTA Abhyas (JEE Main) 2020 · Physics · Nuclear Physics

The particle A is converted into C  via the following reaction.
A→B+ 2He4
B→ C + 2e-
Then

  • A
    A and C are isobars
  • Correct answer
    B
    A and C are isotopes
  • C
    A and B are isobars
  • D
    A and B are isotopes

Solution

Let x be the mass number of A and y the atomic number. Then , since atomic number and mass number remain conserved, we have

 yAx→  y-2Bx-4 +  2He4

 y-2Bx-4→ yCx-4 + 2 -1e0

Hence, we observe that A and C are isotopes as their atomic numbers are same but mass numbers are different.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
