Q36 / 90 · JEE Main 2023 (15 Apr Shift 1) · Mathematics

The number of common tangents, to the circles x2+y2-18x-15y+131=0 and x2+y2-6x-6y-7=0, is

  • Correct answer
    A
    3
  • B
    1
  • C
    4
  • D
    2

Solution

If S≡x2+y2+2gx+2fy+c=0.

C≡-g,-f and r=g2+f2-c.

The given circles are x2+y2-18x-15y+131=0

⇒C19, 152, r1=81+2254-131=52

and x2+y2-6x-6y-7=0

⇒C23, 3, r2=9+9+7=5

⇒d=C1C2=9-32+152-32=36+814=152

⇒r1+r2=52+5=152

⇒C1C2=r1+r2

∴ Circles touch each other externally, 3 common tangents.

Hence this is the correct option.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
