Q3 / 90 · JEE Main 2023 (29 Jan Shift 1) · Chemistry

The magnetic behaviour of Li2O, Na2O2 and KO2, respectively, are

  • A
    diamagnetic, paramagnetic and diamagnetic
  • B
    paramagnetic, paramagnetic and diamagnetic
  • C
    paramagnetic, diamagnetic and paramagnetic
  • Correct answer
    D
    diamagnetic, diamagnetic and paramagnetic

Solution

In the structure Li2O each lithium atom loses one electron to form 2 cations Li+ and oxygen atom gains two electrons to form the anion O2-.  It has no unpaired electrons. So, it is diamagnetic in nature.

The peroxide O22- present in  Na2O2 has 4 electron in π*2p, thus all are paired. So, it is diamagnetic in nature.

In the structure KO2 oxygen is present in O2-. The number of electrons present is 17, where the where the sixteen electrons are from two oxygen atoms and one from the negative charge. There is one unpaired electron present in the last orbital. Hence, it is paramagnetic in nature.

Li2O→ diamagnetic

Na2O2→ diamagnetic

KO2→ paramagnetic

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
