Q35 / 90 · JEE Main 2021 (20 Jul Shift 2) · Mathematics

The lines x=ay-1=z-2 and x=3y-2=bz-2,(ab≠0) are coplanar, if:

  • Correct answer
    A
    b=1,a∈R-{0}
  • B

    a=1, b∈R-{0}

  • C
    a=2, b=2
  • D
    a=2, b=3

Solution

Given lines can be written as

x+1a=y-01=z-1a

x+23=y-01=z-03b

We know that lines x-x1a1=y-y1b1=z-z1c1 and x-x2a2=y-y2b2=z-z2c2 are coplanar if x2-x1y2-y1z2-z1a1b1c1a2b2c2=0.

Hence,

-10-1a1a313b=0

where, b≠0⇒a≠0, since ab≠0.

⇒-3 b-a-1a-3=0

⇒a-3b-a+3=0

⇒b=1

∴b=1,a∈R-0

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
