The joint equation of lines passing through the origin and trisecting the first quadrant is ________

  • A
    x2+3xy-y2=0
  • B
    x2-3xy-y2=0
  • Correct answer
    C
    3x2-4xy+3y2=0
  • D
    3x2-y2=0

Solution

Figure
As given, both line passes through 0, 0 and θ1=π6,  θ2=π3
∴  Equation of first line is.
y-0=tan⁡π6x-0
⇒ y=13x
⇒ x-3y=0 ...... (i)
Equation of second line is
y-0=tan⁡π3(x-0)
⇒ y=3 x
⇒ 3 x-y=0 ...... (ii)
Hence, joint equation of these line is
x-3y3x-y=0
⇒  3x2-xy-3xy+3y2=0
⇒   3x2+3y2-4xy=0

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
