The function f:R→R defined by fx=limn→∞cos2πx-x2nsinx-11+x2n+1-x2n is continuous for all x in

  • A
    R--1
  • Correct answer
    B
    R--1,1
  • C
    R-1
  • D
    R-0

Solution

Given fx=limn→∞cos2πx-x2nsinx-11+x2n+1-x2n

=limn→∞cos2πx-x2nsinx-11+xx2n-x2n

Now for -1<x<1, as 0<x2<1⇒limn→∞x2n→0

i.e. fx=cos2πx

Now again rewriting fx=limn→∞x2-ncos2πx-sinx-1x2-n+x-1

For x>1 or x<-1, limn→∞x-2n→0

i.e. fx=-sinx-1x-1

For x=±1, fx=1 if  x=11+sin2−1 if  x=−1

i.e. limx→1+fx=-1,limx→1-fx=1

So f is discontinuous at x=1

limx→-1+fx=1,limx→-1-fx=-sin22

So fx is discontinuous at x=-1

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
