Q31 / 160 · AP EAMCET 2019 (21 Apr Shift 2) · Chemistry

The copper (II) halide which does not exist is:

  • A
    CuF2
  • B
    CuBr2
  • Correct answer
    C
    CuI2
  • D
    CuCl2

Solution

Iodide ions are very strong reducing agents which reduce copper (II) iodide to copper (I) iodide. So, cupric ions oxidised the iodide ions into the molecular iodine and itself get reduced to cuprous ions. So, CuI2 is not stable and does not exist.

2Cu2+ + 4I-  → 2CuI + I2

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
