Q24 / 90 · JEE Main 2019 (08 Apr Shift 2) · Chemistry

The calculated spin-only magnetic moments BM of the anionic and cationic species of Fe H 2 O 6 +2 and Fe CN64- respectively, are:

  • A
    0 and 4.9
  • B
    2.84 and 5.92
  • Correct answer
    C
    4.9 and 0
  • D
    0 and 5.92

Solution

In both cases iron exhibits +2 oxidation state.

Electronic configuration of F e +2 ion =[Ar]3d6

Figure

In [Fe(H2O)6]2+, H2O is a weak field ligand and hence, no pairing up.

∴ number of unpaired electron n=4

⇒Spin magnetic moment =4(4+2)=24=4.9 BM

In [Fe(CN)6]4-, CN- is a strong field ligand and hence, pairing will occur.

∴ number of unpaired electron n=0

⇒ spin magnetic moment = zero

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
