Q43 / 90 · JEE Main 2019 (10 Apr Shift 2) · Mathematics

The angles A, B & C of a ∆ABC are in A.P. and a:b=1:3. If c=4 cm, then the area (in sq. cm) of this triangle is:

  • Correct answer
    A
    23
  • B
    23
  • C
    43
  • D
    43

Solution

In ∆ ABC, angles A, B, C are in A.P. hence 2∠B=∠A+∠C

Also, by angle sum property ∠A+∠B+∠C=180°

⇒2∠B+∠B=180°

⇒∠B=60°.

Now a:b=1:3

By, using sine rule, we have sinAa=sinBb=sinCc

⇒sinAa=sinBb

⇒sinAsin60°=ab

⇒sinA=13 ·3 2=12

⇒∠A=30° and hence ∠C=90°

Thus, the triangle ABC is a right triangle, with hypotenuse AB=4 cm.

Again, by Sine rule, we have sin30°a=sin60°b=sin90°4

⇒12a=32b=14

⇒12a=14 and 32b=14

⇒a=2 cm and b=23 cm

Figure

Now, the area of ∆ABC=12base×height

=12a·b

=12×2×23=23 sq. cm.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
