The alkaline earth metal sulphate, which has its hydration enthalpy greater than its lattice energy is

  • Correct answer
    A
    BeSO4
  • B
    BaSO4
  • C
    CaSO4
  • D
    SrSO4

Solution

Beryllium sulphate has its hydration enthalpy greater than its lattice enthalpy. Hence, it is highly soluble in water. On moving down the group from Be to Ra, the magnitude of hydration enthalpy decreases significantly, due to increase in the atomic radius of alkaline earth metals, bringing about a decrease in solubility of their sulphates.

If the magnitude of lattice energy is higher than hydration energy then ionic compound is insoluble in water. Whereas if the magnitude of hydration energy is higher than lattice energy, then ionic compound is soluble in water.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
