Molecular velocities of two gases at the same temperature $(\mathrm{T})$ are $\mathrm{u}_{1}$ and $\mathrm{u}_{2} .$ Their masses are $\mathrm{m}_{1}$ and $\mathrm{m}_{2}$ respectively. Which of the following expressions is correct at temperature $\mathrm{T} ?$
- A$\quad \frac{\mathrm{m}_{1}}{\mathrm{u}_{1}^{2}}=\frac{\mathrm{m}_{2}}{\mathrm{u}_{2}^{2}}$
- B$\mathrm{m}_{1} \mathrm{u}_{1}=\mathrm{m}_{2} \mathrm{u}_{2}$
- C$\frac{\mathrm{m}_{1}}{\mathrm{u}_{1}}=\frac{\mathrm{m}_{2}}{\mathrm{u}_{2}}$
- Correct answerD$\mathrm{m}_{1} \mathrm{u}_{1}{ }^{2}=\mathrm{m}_{2} \mathrm{u}_{2}{ }^{2}$
Solution
We know $u \times \sqrt{\frac{\mathrm{T}}{\mathrm{m}}}$ but as $\mathrm{T}$ is same for both gases
Hence u $\propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{\mathrm{m}}}$
$\therefore \frac{\mathrm{u}_{1}}{\mathrm{u}_{2}}=\sqrt{\frac{\mathrm{m}_{2}}{\mathrm{~m}_{1}}}$
or $\frac{\mathrm{u}_{1}^{2}}{\mathrm{u}_{2}^{2}}=\frac{\mathrm{m}_{2}}{\mathrm{~m}_{1}}$
or $\mathrm{m}_{1} \mathrm{u}_{1}^{2}=\mathrm{m}_{2} \mathrm{u}_{2}^{2}$
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
