Methyl acetate and ethyl acetate can be distinguished by

  • A
    Not $\mathrm{KMnO}_4$ solution
  • B
    neutral $\mathrm{FeCl}_3$
  • Correct answer
    C
    iodoform test
  • D
    None of the above

Solution

lodoform test is carried out in hot alkaline medium. Under these condition esters get hydrolysed to give the corresponding alcohol. Now ethyl acetate give ethyl alcohol which respond to iodoform test to give yellow ppt. of $\mathrm{CHI}_3$, while methyl acetate will give methanol which does not give iodoform test. Figure

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
