Q14 / 51 · JEE Advanced 2023 (Paper 1) · Chemistry

Match the reactions (in the given stoichiometry of the reactants) in List-I with one of their products given in List-II and choose the correct option.

  List-I   List-II
(P) P2O3+3H2O→ (1) P(O)OCH3Cl2
(Q) P4+3NaOH+3H2O→ (2) H3PO3
(R) PCl5+CH3COOH→ (3) PH3
(S) H3PO2+2H2O+4AgNO3→ (4) POCl3
    (5) H3PO4

  • A
    P→2; Q→3; R→1; S→5
  • B
    P→3; Q→5; R→4; S→2
  • C
    P→5; Q→2; R→1; S→3
  • Correct answer
    D
    P→2; Q→3; R→4; S→5

Solution

Phosphorus trioxide reacts with water to form phosphorous acid,

P2O3+3H2O→2H3PO3

When acetic acid is heated with phosphorus pentachloride, acetyl chloride is obtained. In this reaction, −COOH group is converted to −COCl group. The side products are phosphorus oxychloride and HCl.

PCl5+CH3COOH→CH3COCl+POCl3+HCl

P4 undergo disproportionation reaction with sodium hydroxide.

P4+3NaOH+3H2O →PH3+3NaH2PO2

Due to the presence two P-H bonds, H3PO2 acts as reducing agent. It reduces Ag+ to Ag.

H3PO2+H2O+AgNO3→H3PO4+HNO3+Ag↓

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
