Match the following columns with reference to cockroaches and select the correct option:

Column-I Column-II
(a) Grinding of the food particles (i) Hepatic caeca
(b) Secrete gastric juice (ii) 10th  segment
(c) 10 pairs (iii) Proventriculus
(d) Anal cerci (iv) Spiracles
    (v) Alary muscles

  • Correct answer
    A
    (a)-(iii), (b)-(i), (c)-(iv), (d)-(ii)
  • B
    (a)-(iv), (b)-(iii), (c)-(v), (d)-(ii)
  • C
    (a)-(i), (b)-(iv), (c)-(iii), (d)-(ii)
  • D
    (a)-(ii), (b)-(iii), (c)-(i), (d)-(iv)

Solution

Anal cerci: A pair of anal cerci arises from the lateral sides of the 10th segment in both males and females. It has a sensitivity to sound & vibrations.

Gizzard/Proventriculus: It consists of six chitinous teeth and helps in the grinding of food materials. The outer membrane is thick to help in grinding.

At the junction between gizzard and midgut, 6-8 finger-like tubular structures are present called hepatic caeca. These hepatic caeca help in the secretion of gastric juice and absorption.

Spiracles: The respiratory system in a cockroach opens to the outside by 10 pairs of lateral openings called spiracles. 2 pairs of spiracles occur in the thorax and 8 pairs in the abdomen.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
