Let the transformed equation of 2x4-8x3+3x2-1=0 so that the term containing the cubic power of x is absent be 2x4+bx2+cx+d=0. Then b=

  • A
    -18
  • B
    -15
  • Correct answer
    C
    -9
  • D
    -16

Solution

Given,

The transformed equation of 2x4-8x3+3x2-1=0 so that the term containing the cubic power of x is absent be 2x4+bx2+cx+d=0,

Now to find the transformed equation we will let x=y+h,

So the equation 2x4-8x3+3x2-1=0 becomes,

2y+h4-8y+h3+3y+h2-1=0

⇒2y4+4y3h+6y2h2+4yh3+h4-8y3+3y2h+3yh2+h3+3y+h2-1=0

⇒2y4+6y2h2+4yh3+h4+y38h-8-83y2h+3yh2+h3+3y+h2-1=0

Now eliminate y3 we will make its coefficient zero,

So 8h-8=0⇒h=1

So transfromed equation will be,

⇒2y4+6y2+4y+1-83y2+3y+1+3y+12-1=0

⇒2y4+12y2+8y+2-24y2-24y-8+3y2+3+6y-1=0⇒2y4-9y2-10y-4=0

Now comparing with  2x4+bx2+cx+d=0 we get b=-9

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
