Q52 / 90 · JEE Main 2023 (11 Apr Shift 2) · Mathematics

Let the probability of getting head for a biased coin be 14. It is tossed repeatedly until a head appears. Let  N be the number of tosses required. If the probability that the equation 64x2+5Nx+1=0 has no real root is pq, where p and q are co-prime, then q-p is equal to..........

Correct answer: 27

Solution

Given a quadratic equation 64x2+5nx+1=0 has no real roots, so

D<0

⇒25N2-4×64<0

⇒N<165⇒N=1,2,3

And, For a biased coin, the probability of getting head is P=14, and probability of getting tail will be  Q=34

So, required probability is

14+34·14+342·14+343·14=pq

⇒141-3431-34=pq

⇒1-343=pq

⇒1-2764=pq

⇒pq=3764

q-p=27

Hence, the correct answer is 27.
