Let the foci and length of the latus rectum of an ellipse x2a2+y2b2=1, a>b be ±5, 0 and 50, respectively. Then, the square of the eccentricity of the hyperbola x2b2−y2a2b2=1 equals

Correct answer: 51

Solution

Given,

Ellipse x2a2+y2b2=1

And its focii ≡±5, 0 and its latusrectum 2b2a=50

So, ae=5 and b2=52a2

Now, using the formula eccentricity we get,

b2=a21−e2=52a2

⇒a1−e2=522 as a≠0

⇒5e1−e2=522

⇒2−2e2=e

⇒2e2+e−2=0

⇒2e2+2e−e−2=0

⇒2ee+2−11+2=0

⇒e+22e−1=0

∴e≠−2; e=12

⇒a=52 and b=5

Now, finding eccentricity of hyperbola,

x2b2−y2a2b2=1

We know that formula of eccentricity of hyperbola is given by, B2=A2eH2-1 where A2=b2 & B2=a2b2

⇒a2b2=b2eH2−1

⇒a2=eH2−1

⇒50=eH2−1

⇒eH2=51

Hence, the correct answer is 51.
