Let f:-1,1→R be a differentiable function satisfying f'x4=16fx2 for all x∈-1,1 f0=0 The number of such functions is

  • A
    2
  • B
    3
  • C
    4
  • Correct answer
    D
    more than 4

Solution

It is given that,

f'x4=16fx2,∀x∈-1,1

⇒f'x2=±4fx

Case I

If fx≥0∀x∈-1,1

Then, f'x=±2fx

⇒f'xfx=±2

⇒2fx=±2x,  ∵f0=0

⇒fx=x2∀x∈-1,1

Case II

If fx<0∀x∈-1,1

Then, f'x=±2-fx

∴ fx=-x2∀x∈-1,1

∴ f1x=x2,0≤x<1x2,-1<x<0

f2x=x2,0≤x<1-x2-1<x<0

f3x=-x2,0≤x<1x2,-1<x<0

f4x=-x2,0≤x<1-x2,-1<x<0

f5x=0

f6x=0,0≤x<1x2,-1<x<0,… and so on.

Hence, there are more than 4 functions possible.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
