Q36 / 90 · JEE Main 2021 (17 Mar Shift 2) · Mathematics

Let a computer program generate only the digits 0 and 1 to form a string of binary numbers with probability of occurrence of 0 at even places be 12 and probability of occurrence of 0 at the odd place be 13. Then the probability that 10 is followed by 01 is equal to :

  • A
    118
  • B
    13
  • C
    16
  • Correct answer
    D
    19

Solution

Given the probability that the digit 0 appear at the even place is 12, hence the probability that the digit 1 appear at the even place is 1-12=12.

And the probability that the digit 0 appear at the odd place is 13, hence the probability that the digit 1 appear at the odd place is 1-13=23.

For the digits '10' and '01' we have the following possibilities

1001odd placeeven placeodd placeeven place

Or

1001even placeodd placeeven placeodd place

Thus, the required probability is 12·13·12·23+23·12·13·12

=118+118=19.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
