Let a common tangent to the curves y2=4x and x-42+y2=16 touch the curves at the points P and Q. Then PQ2 is equal to ________.

Correct answer: 32

Solution

Given,

Common tangent to the curves y2=4x and x-42+y2=16 touch the curves at the points P and Q

Let, the equation of tangent be,

y=mx+am, where a=1 is focus and m is slope,

So, equation of tangent to parabola will be, y=mx+1m

Also line is tangent to circle,

So, using perpendicular distance formula from centre 4, 0to tangent which will be radius r=4, we get,

4m+1mm2+1=4

⇒16m2+1m2+8=16m2+16

 ⇒m2=18

⇒m=±122

Now if m=122 then P=am2, 2am=8, 42

Now equation of tangent will be, x-22y+8=0

And Q will be foot of perpendicular from 4, 0 on tangentx-22y+8=0 ,

So, using foot of perpendicular formula  we get,

x-41=y-0-22=-4-0+812+222

⇒x,y=83, 823

Hence, by distance formula we get,

PQ2=1632+4232

⇒PQ2=256+329=32

Hence, the correct answer is 32.
