Q26 / 54 · JEE Advanced 2022 (Paper 1) · Mathematics

Let ABC be the triangle with AB=1,AC=3 and ∠BAC=π2. If a circle of radius r>0 touches the sides AB,AC and also touches internally the circumcircle of the triangle ABC, then the value of r is ______. (round-off the value to two decimal place)

Correct answer: 0.84

Solution

Let A be the origin B on x-axis, C on y-axis,

So on plotting the diagram we get,

Figure

Now equation of circumcircle is given by

x-122+y-322=122+322=52      ⋯1

Required equation of circle touches AB and AC and have radius r so its equation is given by,

x-r2+y-r2=r2     ⋯2

Now given circle in equation 2 touches circumcircle internally, so by property distance between the centre will be equal to modulus of difference of radii,

So, dc1c2=r1-r2

⇒12-r2+32-r2=52-r2

⇒14+r2-r+94+r2-3r=52-r2

⇒2r2-4r+52=52+r2-10r

⇒  r=0 or r=4-10=0.837

So, r=0.84  (on rounding off)

Hence, the correct answer is 0.84.
