Q31 / 90 · JEE Main 2024 (31 Jan Shift 2) · Mathematics

Let a,b,c be the length of three sides of a triangle satisfying the condition a2+b2x2−2ba+c x+b2+c2=0. If the set of all possible values of x is in the interval α,β, then 12α2+β2 is equal to _______.

Correct answer: 36

Solution

Given,

a2+b2x2−2ba+cx+b2+c2=0

⇒a2x2−2abx+b2+b2x2−2bcx+c2=0

⇒ax−b2+bx−c2=0

⇒ax−b=0, bx−c=0

⇒ax=b, bx=c

Now, we know that the sum of two sides is always greater than the third side of a triangle,

Now, taking a+b>c we get,

⇒a+ax>bx

⇒a+ax>ax2

⇒x2−x−1<0

⇒1-52<x<1+52 ...i

Similarly, for b+c>a we get,

⇒x2+x-1>0

⇒x∈-∞,−1−52∪−1+52,∞ ....ii

And for c+a>b we get,

⇒x2-x+1>0

⇒x∈R ........iii

So, from the equation i, ii & iii we get,

x∈-1+52,1+52

⇒α=5−12, β=5+12

Hence, 12α2+β2=125−12+5+124=36

Hence, the correct answer is 36.
