Q52 / 90 · KVPY 2019 (SB/SX) · Mathematics

Let ABC be a triangle and let D be the mid-point of BC. Suppose cot∠CAD:cot∠BAD=2:1. If G is the centroid of ΔABC, then the measure of ∠BGA is

  • Correct answer
    A
    90°
  • B
    150°
  • C
    120°
  • D
    135°

Solution

Let ΔABC and D is the mid-point of side BC,

then

According to Apollonius theorem,

AD2=12b2+c2-a24

⇒AD=122b2+2c2-a2

∵ AGGD=21

⇒AG=23AD=132b2+2c2-a2

Similarly BG=132c2+2a2-b2

So, cosθ=BG2+AG2-AB22BGAG, where θ=∠AGB

=192c2+2a2-b2+192b2+2c2-a2-c22BGAG

=a2+b2-5c218BGAG   ...(i)

Now, as cotθ2=2cotθ1

⇒cosθ2sinθ2=2cosθ1sinθ1

⇒AD2+b2-a242AD·bsinθ2=2AD2+c2-a242AD·csinθ1

⇒AD2+b2-a244areaΔADC=2AD2+c2-a244areaΔADB

⇒AD2+b2-a24=2AD2+2c2-a22

∵ΔADC=ΔADB

⇒AD2=b2+a24-2c2

⇒142b2+2c2-a2=b2+a24-2c2

⇒2b2+2a2=10c2

⇒a2+b2=5c2  ...(ii)

From Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get

cosθ=0

⇒θ=π2

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
