Q42 / 90 · JEE Main 2021 (20 Jul Shift 1) · Mathematics

Let A=aij be a 3×3 matrix, where aij=1, if i=j-x, if i-j=12x+1, otherwise
Let a function f:R→R be defined as fx=detA. Then the sum of maximum and minimum values of f on R is equal to:

  • A
    -2027
  • B
    8827
  • C
    2027
  • Correct answer
    D
    -8827

Solution

We have,

aij=1, if i=j-x, if i-j=12x+1, otherwise

Then,

A=1−x2x+1−x1−x2x+1−x1

⇒  A=1-x2+x-x+2x2+x+2x+1x2-2x-1

⇒A=1-x2+2x3+2x3-4x2-2x+x2-2x-1

⇒A=fx=4x3-4x2-4x

⇒f'x=43x2−2x−1

For maxima or minima, f'x=0

⇒  3x2−2x−1=0

⇒  x=1, −13

Now,

f''x=46x-2

f''1=46·1-2=16>0( point of minima)

f''-13=46·-13-2=-16<0 ( point of maxima)

Hence, required sum is

f1+f-13

=-4+2027=−8827

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
