Q43 / 90 · JEE Main 2022 (25 Jun Shift 1) · Mathematics

Let a→=a1i^+a2j^+a3k^, ai>0, i=1,2,3 be a vector which makes equal angles with the coordinate axes OX,OY and OZ. Also, let the projection of a→ on the vector 3i^+4j^ be 7 . Let b→ be a vector obtained by rotating a→ with 90°. If a→,b→ and x-axis are coplanar, then projection of a vector b→ on 3i^+4j^ is equal to

  • A
    7
  • Correct answer
    B
    2
  • C
    2
  • D
    7

Solution

Given a→=a1i^+a2j^+a3k^

Since the vector makes equal angles with the coordinate axes OX,OY and OZ, so

a→=λ13i^+13j^+13k^=λ3i^+j^+k^

Now projection of a→on b→=7

⇒λ3i^+j^+k^·3i^+4j^5=7

⇒λ=53

So a→=5i^^+j^+k^

Let b→=5αi^+j^+k^+βi^

Since both vectors are perpendicular a→·b→=0

⇒25α3+5β=0

⇒15α+β=0⇒β=-15α

i.e. b→=5α-2i^+j^+k^

b→=53

b→=±52-2i^+j^+k^

Projection of b→ on 3i^+4j^ is

b→·3i^+4j^5=±52-6+45=±2

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
