Q40 / 90 · JEE Main 2022 (25 Jun Shift 1) · Mathematics

Let A=0-220. If M and N are two matrices given by M=∑k=110 A2k and N=∑k=110 A2k-1 then MN2 is

  • Correct answer
    A
    a non-identity symmetric matrix
  • B
    a skew-symmetric matrix
  • C
    neither symmetric nor skew-symmetric matrix
  • D
    an identity matrix

Solution

Since A=0-220

So A2=0-2200-220=-400-4=-4I

and A3=-4A

Similarly A4=-4I-4I=-42I,

A5=-42A,   A6=-43I

Now M=∑k=110A2k=A2+A4+….+A20

=-4+-42+-43+….+-420I

=-k1I

So M is symmetric matrix

N=∑k=110 A2k-1=A+A3+……+A19

=A1+-4+-42+……+-49

=k2A

So N is skew symmetric

⇒N2 is symmetric matrix

Hence, MN2 is non-identity symmetric matrix

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
