In the figure given below, for an angle of incidence 45° at the top surface, what is the minimum refractive index needed for total internal reflection at the vertical face?

Figure

  • A
    2+12
  • B
    12
  • Correct answer
    C
    32
  • D
    2+1

Solution

At point A , by Snell's law

Figure

μ=sin⁡45osin⁡r⇒sin⁡r=1μ2 ... (i)

At point B , total internal reflection with sin⁡i1=1μ

From figure, i1=90o-r .... (ii)

sin⁡90o-r=1μ⇒cos⁡r=1μ .... (iii)

Now, cos⁡r=1-sin2⁡r=1-12μ2=2μ2-1μ2

From equation (ii) and (iii), 1μ=2μ2-12μ2

Squaring both sides and then solving, we get

μ=32

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
