Q41 / 90 · JEE Main 2023 (01 Feb Shift 1) · Mathematics

In a binomial distribution B(n,p), the sum and product of the mean & variance are 5 and 6 respectively, then find 6(n+p-q) is equal to :-

  • A
    51
  • Correct answer
    B
    52
  • C
    53
  • D
    50

Solution

For the binomial distribution B(n, p),

Mean =np and Variance =npq

Sum of mean and variance =np+npq=5

⇒np(1+q)=5

⇒n2p2(1+q)2=25     ....(1)

Product of mean and variance =np.npq=6

⇒n2p2q=6      ....(2)

Put the value of n2p2 from equation (2) into equation (1):

6q(1+q)2=25

⇒6q2+12q+6=25q

⇒6q2-13q+6=0

⇒(3q-2)(2q-3)=0

⇒q=23, 32 where q=23 accepted

∴ p=13⇒n·13+n·13·23=5

⇒3n+2n9=5

⇒n=9

Therefore,

6(n+p-q)=69+13-23=52

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
