Q39 / 90 · JEE Main 2014 (19 Apr Online) · Mathematics

If x→=3i^-6j^-k^, y→=i^+4j^-3k^ and z→=3i^-4j^-12k^, then the magnitude of the projection of x→×y→ on z→ is

  • Correct answer
    A
    14
  • B
    12
  • C
    15
  • D
    10

Solution

Given x→=3i^-6j^-k^, y→=i^+4j^-3k^ and z→=3i^-4j^-12k^.

⇒x→×y→=i^j^k^3-6-114-3

=i^18+4-j^-9+1+k^12+6=22i^+8j^+18k^=211i^+4j^+9k^

Now, we know that the projection of a vector a→ on b→ is defined as a→·b→b→

Hence, the magnitude of projection of x→×y→ on z→ is x→×y→·z→z→

=211i+4j+9k·3i^-4j^-12k^3i^-4j^-12k^

=233-16-10832+42+122

=2×91169=2×9113=14.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
