If the roots of the equation 3x3-26x2+52x-24=0 are in geometric progression, then the sum of two of its roots is

  • Correct answer
    A
    83
  • B
    103
  • C
    9
  • D
    10

Solution

Let, the roots of the equation 3x3-26x2+52x-24=0 are ar, a, ar.

We know that, the sum and product of roots of the equation Ax3+Bx2+Cx+D=0 are respectively -BA and -DA.

Hence, we have product of roots ar×a×ar=--243

⇒a3=8

⇒a=2.

Now, the sum of the roots ar+a+ar=--263

⇒2r+2+2r=263

⇒2+2r+2r2r=263

⇒6+6r+6r2=26r

⇒3r2-10r+3=0

⇒3r-1r-3=0

⇒r=13 or r=3.

Hence, the roots are 23, 2, 6.

And, the sum of two of them is 23+2=83 or 2+6=8 or 23+6=203.

Out of these three possible sums 83 is given in the option.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
