If the equation of the normal to the curve y=x-ax+bx-2 at the point 1,-3 is x-4y=13 then the value of a+b is equal to ______

Correct answer: 4

Solution

Given curve is

y=x-ax+bx-2   ...1

At point 1,-3, we have

-3=1-a1+b1-2

⇒31+b=1-a

⇒1-a=3+3b

Differentiating 1 both sides w.r.t. x, we get

dydx=(x+b)(x-2)×(1)-(x-a)(2x+b-2)(x+b)2(x-2)2

At (1,-3) slope of normal is 14, hence

dxdy=-14

⇒dydx1,-3=-4,

⇒-4=(1+b)(-1)-(1-a)b(1+b)2(-1)2

⇒-4=(1+b)(-1)-3(b+1)b(1+b)2

⇒-4=-1-3b1+b

∵b≠-1

⇒4+4b=1+3b

⇒b=-3

So, a=7

Hence, a+b=4

Hence, the correct answer is 4.
