If the curves x2a2+y24=1 and y3=16x intersect at right angles, then a2=

  • A
    23
  • B
    23
  • Correct answer
    C
    43
  • D
    34

Solution

We have curves x2a2+y24=1 and y3=16x,

Let, these two curves intersect at x1, y1

Slope of tangent at point x1, y1 in the curve  x2a2+y24=1

y24=1-x2a2 ⇒ 2y4×dydx=-2xa2 ⇒ dydxx1, y1=m1x1, y1=-4x1y1a2

Slope of tangent at a point in the curve:  y3=16x

3y2dydx=16 ⇒ dydxx1, y1=m2x1, y1=163y12

These curves intersect at right angle

So, m1×m2=-1 ⇒ -4x1y1a2×163y12=-1 ⇒ -64x13a2y13=-1 ⇒ -64x13a2×16x1=-1

⇒a2=43

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
