Q48 / 125 · BITSAT 2017 · Mathematics

If cos(x-y),cosx and cos(x+y) are in HP, then cosxsec(y/2) is equal to

  • Correct answer
    A
    ±2
  • B
    ±1/2
  • C
    ±2
  • D
    None of these

Solution

Given that, cos(x-y),cosx,cos(x+y) are in HP.

Then, cosx=2cos(x-y)cos(x+y)cos(x-y)+cos(x+y)

⇒cosx=2cos2x-sin2y2cosxcosy

⇒cos2xcosy=cos2x-sin2y

⇒cos2x(cosy-1)=-sin2y

⇒cos2x(1-cosy)=1-cos2y

⇒cos2x(1-cosy)=(1-cosy)(1+cosy)

⇒cos2x=1+cosy⇒cos2x=2cos2y/2

⇒cos2xsec2(y/2)=2

⇒cosxsec(y/2)=±2

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
