Q5 / 71 · NTA Abhyas (JEE Main) 2020 · Mathematics · Inverse Trigonometric Functions

If θ=cot-1α, φ=cot-1β and αβ=-1 α>β, then the value of θ-φ is equal to

  • A
    0
  • B
    π4
  • C
    π2
  • Correct answer
    D
    -π2

Solution

∵cot-1α=θ⇒α=cot⁡θ...........i
Also, cot-1β=φ⇒β=cot⁡φ...........ii
Now, given αβ=-1

So, from (i) & (ii), we get,
cot⁡θ.cot⁡φ=-1⇒tan⁡θtan⁡φ=-1   .........iii
tanθ-φ=tan⁡θ-tan⁡φ1+tan⁡θtan⁡φ............iv
θ-ϕ=±π2 (from (iii) and (iv))
But, α>β⇒θ<φ⇒θ-φ=-π2

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
