Q14 / 160 · WBJEE 2012 · Chemistry
Identify the correct statement from the following in a chemical reaction.
- AThe entropy always increases
- Correct answerBThe change in entropy along with suitable change in enthalpy decides the rate of reaction
- CThe enthalpy always decreases
- DBoth the enthalpy and the entropy remain constant
Solution
\(\Delta \mathrm{G}(\mathrm{T}, \mathrm{P})=\Delta \mathrm{H}-\mathrm{T} \Delta \mathrm{S}\) gives the free energy of system.
When \(\Delta \mathrm{G}(\mathrm{T}, \mathrm{P})<0\), the reaction is spontaneous.
When \(\Delta \mathrm{G}(\mathrm{T}, \mathrm{P})>0\), the reaction is non-spontaneous.
Hence, entropy changed with a suitable change in enthalpy will decide the rate of the reaction.
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
