Select the correct statement.

I. Formation of $A$ has proceeded with racemisation. II. Formation of $B$ has proceeded with inversion. Select the correct statement. Select the correct statement.
- Correct answerAI and II
- BOnly I
- COnly III
- DNone of these
Solution
$\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{N}} 1$ reaction proceed through formation of carbocation which can form a pair of enantiomers. Thus, recemisation takes place (statement I). $\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{N}} 2$ reaction takes place forming pantavalent intermediate which loses $\mathrm{Cl}^{-}$giving inverted alcohol. (Statement II ) Hence, statements I and II both are correct.
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
