Q8 / 90 · JEE Main 2022 (25 Jul Shift 2) · Chemistry

High purity >99.95% dihydrogen is obtained by

  • A
reaction of zinc with aqueous alkali.
  • Correct answer
    B
electrolysis of warm aqueous barium hydroxide solution between nickel electrodes.
  • C
electrolysis of acidified water using platinum electrodes.
  • D
reaction of zinc with dilute acid.

Solution

Dihydrogen of high purity (>99.95%) is obtained by electrolysing warm aqueous barium hydroxide solution between nickel electrodes. In electrolysis, the reaction occurs at the anode and cathode :-

At anode :- 2OH-→H2O + 12O2 + 2e-

At cathode :- 2H2O + 2e- →2OH- +H2

Hence, the high purity dihydrogen is obtained by electrolysing warm aqueous barium hydroxide.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
