Q11 / 14 · NTA Abhyas (JEE Main) 2020 · Chemistry · Practical Chemistry

Gradual addition of potassium iodide solution to aqueous BiNO33 solution initially produces a dark brown precipitate which dissolves in excess of KI to give a clear yellow solution. Identify the yellow precipitate.

  • A
    I2
  • Correct answer
    B
    KI3
  • C
    BiOH2
  • D
    BiOH NO32

Solution

At first BiNO33 undergoes hydrolysis.

Nitric acid is formed which oxidises I − to iodine. The liberated iodine dissolves in K to form yellow precipitate of KI3 .

BiNO33+ H2O→BiOHNO32 + HNO3

2HNO3→H2O + 2NO2+ O

2KI+ H2O + O→2KOH +I2Dark brown

I2+ KI→KI3yellow solution

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
